School Counsellor Framework

Certification

School counsellors promote student success and address academic, personal, social and career development needs by designing, implementing, assessing, and enhancing the School Counsellor Framework.

Through leadership, advocacy and collaboration, School Counsellors foster equity and access to personalized educational experiences for all students. School Counsellors are data-informed, using evidence to identify student needs, systemic concerns, and effective interventions.

School Counsellors (and Child and Youth Team) are members of the Education Support Services Team. School Counsellors support a Response to Intervention (RTI) approach to collaboratively develop Individual Behaviour Support Plans (IBSPs) to address challenging student behaviour. They may work directly with students or provide mentorship to classroom teachers in the application of evidence-informed practices to address student behaviour.

School Counsellors strive to help students to develop learner agency, so students have the:

  • initiative and capacity to act in a desired direction or toward desired goals;
  • ability to make meaningful changes in oneself or the environment; and,
  • the ability to determine (one’s) own course of action.
