School Data and Planning
Using data to inform school planning is an essential part of the role of the school counsellor. By asking students meaningful questions, schools can identify needs, respond to concerns, and strengthen supports that promote student well-being and mental health. In New Brunswick, several tools help schools gather this information.
Elementary Check-In Survey (Grades 4–5)
The Elementary Check-In (ECI) Survey gathers student perspectives on well-being, engagement, and relationships at school. It is brief and completed in the classroom.
Students may complete the survey twice a year (fall and spring), allowing schools to monitor progress and adjust supports. School counsellors can request results from their principal to inform planning and practice.
Youth Check-In Survey (Grades 6–12)
The Youth Check-In Survey explores how students are feeling, including indicators of anxiety, depression, and access to supports. It also examines students’ sense of connection to peers, adults, and their learning.
This short, classroom-based survey can be administered twice yearly (fall and spring) to assess changes over time. Results can be used by school counsellors to guide planning and targeted supports. School counsellors can request results from their principal to inform planning and practice.
